The latest news, materials, and upcoming events from The Language Conservancy Don't forget to connect with us on social media News & Recent Events NISQUALLY RELEASE EVENT  On the 8th of July, The Nisqually Indian Tribe held a release event at the Nisqually Youth Center in Olympia, Washington. Over the past several years TLC and the Nisqually tribe have worked together to produce 9 original picture books and an Alphabet Coloring Book, as well as a Nisqually keyboard for Mac, PC, Android, and iOS.  After a prayer by Chay Squally and some words from Chairman Willy Frank III, everyone enjoyed food from the buffet. Members of the community gathered together to celebrate another step in preserving the Nisqually Language.   Lakota Summer Institute Recap Last month we spent 2 weeks immersed in Lakota Language with over 50 passionate Lakota Summer Institute participants. We were happy to see both the new and familiar faces of the Lakota language learners. Learners spent their time engaged in communicative (conversational) Lakota and Lakota grammar through zoom. Participants had the option to join the beginner or pre-intermediate tracks based on their Lakota language experience. We laughed, learned, and grew deeper into our Lakota language journeys, and we are incredibly thankful. We would like to send a big wóphila to the 2022 LSI participants as well as our instructors Allen Wilson, Jan Ullrich, Kimberlee Campbell, Shania Black Bear-Searby, and Marek Kupiec.    CONGRATULATIONS TO DILZHE'E APACHE   The Rapid Word Collection (RWC) for Apache Language resources ended in July this year! Dilzhe'e Apache Elders completed their dictionary database and recordings for online and mobile dictionaries RWC is a primary step toward creating more language learning materials.  Thanks to the hard work of Dilzhe'e Apache Elders, the project is closer than ever to reach this goal.  HO-CHUNK DICTIONARY RELEASE   This July, the Ho-Chunk Nation has released a free online and mobile dictionary! The digital dictionary's completion is the result of years of word collection, review, and verification by Elders and speakers.  “This resource is long-overdue and much-needed for our language learners, particularly those who do not have an Elder available to them to ask about specific words. It has the capability to open one’s awareness to the richness of our language. I consider it a gift from all our Elder speakers who have worked with the Language Division over these 30 years to all of us who continue in our desire to keep the Hoocąk language alive.” - Adrienne Thunder, Language Division Manager. Online Dictionary Apple Android YouTube Highlights If you follow TLC on Facebook and subscribe to our newsletter, you have likely heard the term "Rapid Word Collection" (RWC for short). This video explains this innovative technique that is helping support language revitalization efforts.  I saw a Skunk! is a bilingual picture book in English and Apsáalooke (the Crow Language).
