As we set sail into the new year, The Language Conservancy extends our heartfelt appreciation for your continued support. Your dedication has been a beacon, guiding us through a year filled with meaningful milestones and impactful endeavors. Thank you!

To address the urgent matter of Indigenous language loss, the United Nations declared the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. In response to this, The Language Conservancy hosted the inaugural 2023 International Conference on Indigenous Language Documentation, Education, and Revitalization (ICILDER) – the first of its kind, in October.

ICILDER fostered a weekend of critical discussions on forwarding Indigenous language revitalization throughout the globe, hosted near our headquarters in Bloomington, Indiana. Garnering the attention of over 200 participants, ICILDER was the first of its kind, and a testament to the unwavering work and perseverance of Elders, community leaders, linguists and Indigenous language champions alike.

June and July saw the return of the Crow Summer Institute, hosted at Little Big Horn College (LBHC), in Crow Agency, Montana.

In partnership with LBHC and the Crow Language Consortium, we welcomed more than 50 individual attendees at two 1-week sessions of Apsáalooke language learning courses. Language educators and language learners alike were able to attend this year’s Summer Institute through its online & in-person course offerings.

In 2023, with your invaluable support, TLC accomplished ground breaking feats in the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages.

In addition to commencing work on more that 20 new projects, we proudly supported the development of 137 learning materials for 23 Indigenous language communities across North America - in 2023, developing materials at 3 times the rate of previous years.

From introductory language books to engaging apps and interactive videos, each material developed represents a crucial step in our shared journey to empower Indigenous communities through language.

It is through your support that we can continue to make a lasting impact together, protecting, preserving, and revitalizing Indigenous languages for generations to come.

As we express our deepest gratitude for the year that was, we look ahead to a New Year filled with hope, resilience, and the promise of further accomplishments.
